Oh the joys of spring! This weekend was the first this year where we have enjoyed three days of relative dry warm sunny weather – which is always welcome for a KVH3 hash as it never rains on any of them! A good number turned out today at The Sun Inn to enjoy Ainslie’s and Julie’s hash – this was Julie’s first time laying trail for KVH3 and they split the tasks of laying the trails, Ainslie the short and Julie the long.

The Memorial

Ainslie and Julie gave their briefings before the off. Ainslie mention two points of interest that we could discover en route, both associated with Richard Jefferies, the renowned Swindon author and poet. The first a memorial to Mrs Frances Gay could be located up a hill just inside Coate Water, the second ” The Council Oak” situated by the lake on our way back to The Sun.

Julie explained that the long trail she had laid consisted of a couple of loops added to Ainslie’s short trail – but with one of the loops to be ignored.

On! On! turning left out of The Sun Inn car park and right into Coate Water where some of us ascended the hill to see the Frances Gay memorial.

The trail continued through the wooded area and recreation grounds between Marlborough Road and Broome Manor Lane where the short/long divide was located.

Those hashers taking the short made their way back to The Sun going around the Coate Water lake.

The long trail followed a route out towards Pipers Way, around the back of Broome Manor Golf Club with the M4 on the right and across Hodson Lane back through Coate Water and around the lake towards The Sun.

Both trails were well marked with plenty of flour – so much so that at some spots I could have thrown in a few extra ingredients and a made a sponge cake.

As the weather had blessed us today, we could enjoy the sight of bluebells, the smell of fresh green foliage and hear the bird song along the trails.

Mr and Mrs GOM were the last hashers following the long trail around Broome Manor and they came across, for the first time in our hashing experience, an unusual phenomenon a check mark that was kicked out in two different directions – one way would lead us to a bridge across the M4 clearly marked with a “T’s” on both sides of the bridge so we turned back and followed the trail in the other direction around Broome Manor.

The Council Oak

Mr and Mrs GOM were last to reappear back at The Sun to enjoy the après where most hashers had stayed on to enjoy a beverage in the garden while the sun was still shining. GOM thanked Ainslie and Julie for two well marked trails and remarked on the abundance of flour put down.

Kathy still has the bags in her car which will be awarded when the weather gets warmer.

Henry awarded the horn to Maurice for falling over – much to the amusement of his daughter.
