Well, our hashes are coming thick and fast – it is only three weeks since the last one!
Mr and Mrs GOM were the lucky hares, managing to organise a dry sunny day, albeit windy, between the low depressions.
There were 16 hashers, including the hares, who turned up at The Jovial Monk, although one of the hashers only made an early cameo appearance – not the group photo nor even the start. Jeremy had no sooner arrived than he had to depart to collect his better half from Hungerford Station who was arriving earlier than expected. Fortunately, John and Viv came along to run and Sue and Pete joined them, so laying a long and short trail was not in vain.
GOM gave the briefing to the ensemble, stating that this hash would be mud free, cow free and sheep free, although he couldn’t guarantee the location of any other animals. The long trail was about 5 miles in a figure of eight, but no one would know this unless they had a drone. The short was just under 3 miles and if the hashers kept to the trail there would be no steep hill to climb at the end to get back to The Jovial Monk. Blunsdon is a very hilly place!
GOM set them off to the On! On! at the back of the pub along Salzgitter Way (named after the council’s twin town in Germany) but decided to stay at the pub as he needed to rest his bad feet; he couldn’t face another 5 mile hike. Mrs GOM accompanied Mike just in case the hills got the better of him and he needed to find a short cut back to the pub.
Viv, John, Sue and Pete set off for the run, it was Pete’s first ever hash run and apparently only the third time that he had run, and on their return to The Jovial Monk Viv had nothing but praise for the way he stayed the course and kept up the pace with every one. Pete did say his throat was very dry with the combination of enthusiastic running and the strong wind hitting the back of his throat.
Some hashers did take a short cut due to the threat of a shower and walked up a steep hill to get back to The Jovial Monk. Everyone returned for the après around the same time. Some had a cooked breakfast, which was very enjoyable by all accounts. Many thanked the hares for a trail well laid which Mr and Mrs GOM were thankful for as we expected the strong wind to have blown all the flour away. Mike did the honours of thanking the hares for their endeavours and presented the horn to John for being an excellent runner and hasher!
